Best Projector for a Small Bedroom

In a small bedroom, pick a projector with a throw ratio around 1.2:1 or lower and enough brightness for the image you can fit: our top pick is the XGIMI Elfin Flip Plus. XGIMI rates it at 500 ISO lumens with a 1.2:1 throw, so roughly 7 feet gives an 80-inch picture. Its flip stand also tilts to the ceiling when the wall is too close.

In detail

Who each one suits

Specifications are each brand’s own; fit notes draw on independent reviews and measurements. We have not tested or used these projectors ourselves.

Best for small bedrooms#1

XGIMI Elfin Flip Plus

The Elfin Flip Plus is the brightest model in our list on paper: XGIMI rates it at 500 ISO lumens. It is a slim, book-sized 1080p projector with Google TV and licensed Netflix, and its integrated stand rotates 150°, so it can point at a wall or the ceiling.

Why it stands out

  • 500 ISO lumens (XGIMI’s figure), the most of any projector we list.
  • Google TV with licensed Netflix; throw ratio of 1.2:1 for a big image in a short room.
  • Fan rated 28 dB or less; XGIMI’s Intelligent Eye Protection dims the image when someone steps in front of the lens.

Good fit if

  • Your bedroom isn’t fully dark at night.
  • The room is short and you need a large image from close up.
  • You want Google TV and a design that looks tidy on a dresser.

Skip it if

  • You need a battery.
  • Your budget stops at Mid-range — it sits in our Premium tier.
Best small-room value#2

Dangbei N2 mini

The N2 mini puts the three things a bedroom asks for into one Mid-range box: a gimbal that tilts from the wall to the ceiling, licensed Netflix with no stick, and a fan Dangbei rates under 27 dB. It is a native 1080p LCD projector rated at 200 ISO lumens, which suits a dark room and a modest image better than a bright one.

Why it stands out

  • Built-in gimbal with 190° of tilt, so it can sit on a nightstand and aim straight up at the ceiling.
  • Licensed Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video come pre-installed on Dangbei’s Linux system (the brand’s description).
  • Auto focus, auto keystone, screen fit and obstacle avoidance; Dangbei rates the fan under 27 dB.

Good fit if

  • You watch with the lights off and want 80–100 inches, not a giant screen.
  • You want to lie back and watch on the ceiling without a tripod.
  • You want Netflix to work out of the box.

Skip it if

  • Light leaks in at night — a brighter model like the Elfin Flip Plus copes better.
  • You need Google TV specifically: the N2 mini runs Dangbei’s own Linux system with about 300 apps.
  • You want battery power — it has none.

Brightness is Dangbei’s own ISO 21118 figure. Android Authority framed its review around ceiling viewing, which is where this model makes the most sense.

Shortest throw#3

Aurzen EAZZE E1R

The E1R is a palm-sized Roku projector that weighs under a pound and tilts 180° to the ceiling. It is native 720p and Aurzen rates it at 160 lumens without saying ANSI, so it belongs in a small, dark room. It is one of the few Budget-tier projectors with a streaming system built in: Roku TV, with Netflix among the apps Aurzen lists.

Why it stands out

  • Roku TV built in at a Budget-tier price.
  • 180° rotating stand for wall or ceiling; under 1 lb.
  • Short 1.12:1 throw for a decent image close up.
Brightness (brand)160 lumens (not ANSI)
ResolutionNative 720p

Ceiling viewingBuilt-in 180° stand
Fan noise (brand)Not stated

Good fit if

  • A kid’s room or a tiny bedroom with blackout curtains.
  • You want streaming built in but can’t spend Mid-range money.

Skip it if

  • You want sharp 1080p detail or any light in the room.
  • You dislike manual focus — it uses a focus wheel.

Brightness figures disagree: Aurzen lists 160 lumens, while one review lists 300 ANSI. We go by the brand’s lower number.

Also worth a look

Nebula Capsule 3

The Capsule 3 is about the size of a soda can and carries a battery rated for about 2.5 hours in Eco mode. Nebula rates it at 200 ANSI lumens with native 1080p and Google TV with licensed Netflix. CNET named it its best 1080p mini projector and TechRadar its best mini projector.

Why it stands out

  • Soda-can size with a built-in battery (about 2.5 hours, Eco).
  • Google TV with licensed Netflix and an 8W Dolby speaker.
  • Auto focus, auto keystone, screen fit and obstacle avoidance; fan rated under 28 dB.
Brightness (brand)200 ANSI lumens
ResolutionNative 1080p
Apps & NetflixGoogle TV, licensed Netflix
Ceiling viewingOptional stand only
Fan noise (brand)Under 28 dB

Good fit if

  • You want the smallest projector that still shows native 1080p.
  • You move it between rooms or take it on trips.
  • You value mini-projector picks from CNET and TechRadar.

Skip it if

  • You want ceiling viewing without extras — it has no built-in tilt stand (Nebula sells an optional stand).
  • You want a bright image in a room that isn’t dark.

Measured your room yet?

Distance divided by throw ratio gives image width. A short room just means a smaller picture or the ceiling.

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Do the math first

ProjectorCentral defines throw ratio as distance divided by image width. At 1.2:1, 7 feet gives about 80 inches; 8.7 feet gives about 100.

02

Use the ceiling

When there’s no free wall far enough away, a tilting projector on the nightstand can use the ceiling instead.

03

Keep fan and bed apart

In a small room the projector sits close to your head. BenQ says a 30 dB projector is barely audible from about 6.6 feet; closer, you’ll hear more.

Honest note

None of the projectors we cover is short throw by AVIXA’s 0.4–1.0:1 definition, so these small-room picks still need around 7 feet for 80 inches. If your bed is closer to the wall than that, plan on a smaller image or ceiling viewing.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How far from the wall does a projector need to be in a small room?

Multiply throw ratio by image width. With a 1.2:1 projector, about 7 feet gives an 80-inch image and about 8.7 feet gives 100 inches. Dangbei gives the same example: about 2.65 m for 100 inches at 1.2:1.

What screen size suits a small bedroom?

Usually 60–80 inches. Sound & Vision’s examples show that from 7 feet about 52 inches meets the widely quoted SMPTE 30° guideline and about 63 inches meets THX’s, so a small room doesn’t need a giant picture to feel immersive.

Is a short-throw projector worth it for a small bedroom?

Only if the budget allows. Short-throw models make a big image from very close, but most projectors we cover sit around 1.12–1.3:1, between AVIXA’s short-throw range and the 1.5:1 where it says standard throw starts. A low-throw mini, a smaller image or ceiling projection are cheaper ways around a short room.

Can I put the projector behind my head on a shelf?

Yes, if the shelf gives enough clearance. AWOL Vision suggests a high shelf at the back of the room as long as there is ventilation around the projector; Epson asks for at least 20 cm from the wall. Keep vents clear of pillows and headboards.

Will keystone correction let me place it off to the side?

It will square the picture, at a cost. ProjectorScreen.com says digital keystone can cut visible resolution by up to 50%. Put the projector as square to the wall as you can and use keystone for the last few degrees.

Does a small room need fewer lumens?

Generally, yes. A smaller image spreads the same light over less area, so it looks brighter. ProjectorScreen.com’s formula shows brightness falls as screen area grows, which is why a modest image in a small dark room works with a mini projector.
